Ford was the first of the American giants to take the plunge by offering an electrified version of its legendary F-150 pickup truck. In fact, the manufacturer didn't just graft an electric powertrain onto the existing model. Instead, Ford created a distinct model with its own identity, benefiting from a name that has marked history, adding a touch of nostalgia that perfectly contrasts with the futuristic side of the F-150 Lightning.
The Ford F-150 Lightning has continued to gain popularity since it hit the market in 2022, and it was an excellent move by the American manufacturer to bring the model to market so quickly. Moreover, the brand is constantly improving the truck's offering. For 2025, the F-150 Lightning benefits from several new versions, including the Platinum Black model. Ford has also made some updates to the BlueCruise system to make it even more efficient. The biggest improvement, however, is undoubtedly the new heat pump, which optimizes cabin heating in winter while reducing battery consumption.
Range and Pricing
For 2025, the American manufacturer's truck lineup includes five versions, starting with the PRO model with a base price of $62,890. Unsurprisingly, this version is mainly aimed at businesses. For most people, the real Lightning lineup begins with the XLT version at $72,890. One of the big new additions this year is the Flash version at $84,390. Next, there is the classic Lariat model at $98,490. Finally, the Platinum version sits at the top of the range with a starting price of $113,390. As with the gasoline-powered F-150, the Lightning offers a wide range of options for each version. So, you should expect the bill to climb by several thousand dollars.
Category and Competition
It goes without saying that the arrival of the Ford F-150 Lightning on the market has, in a way, forced other manufacturers to jump into the adventure as well. As a result, there is now quite a selection of electric pickups available. However, the F-150 Lightning remains by far the most interesting and well-balanced model of the lot.
Rivals: Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Hummer EV, GMC Sierra EV, Rivian R1T, Tesla Cybertruck
Design and Technology
The F-150 Lightning is quite close in shape to the gasoline-powered F-150, but it's in the small details that you can easily distinguish one from the other. The American manufacturer's electric truck offers headlights adorned with a long light bar that runs across the entire grille. The rear lights essentially share the same design. Beyond that, the F-150 Lightning offers unique wheels.
The cabin of the F-150 Lightning is very similar to that of the gasoline-powered F-150, which is an excellent thing since the design of the American truck's cabin has been carefully studied to provide the best possible space with maximum comfort.
On the technology side, the F-150 Lightning lacks nothing. The American manufacturer's truck offers one of the most beautiful digital instrument clusters in the industry. Not to mention its massive multimedia screen that ranges from 12 to 15.5 inches depending on the version. The F-150 Lightning also offers the brilliant BlueCruise system, along with a suite of technologies that deliver one of the most advanced hands-free driving experiences on the market.
Performance
The 2025 Ford F-150 Lightning offers two mechanical options, starting with the standard-range version. This version comes with a 98.0 kWh battery pack. It provides a range of 386 kilometers on a full charge. This version delivers 452 horsepower and 775 pound-feet of torque. Then there's the extended-range version, which is slightly more powerful with 580 horsepower, though torque remains the same at 775 pound-feet. It also gets a larger 131 kWh battery pack, bringing total range to 515 kilometers.
Weaknesses
The price rises quickly from one version to another. Charging times are relatively long. Range drops significantly when towing.
Strengths
It's a versatile and very comfortable truck. It offers a genuine wealth of cutting-edge technologies. Its performance is impressive.
Signature Element
The Ford F-150 Lightning is the electric vehicle that can meet the needs of the greatest number of people.
Final Word
We can say that Ford got it right with the F-150 Lightning. It's a model that is generally very well appreciated by buyers and one of the rare electric models that I personally have an interest in. If that's not enough to convince you it's an excellent vehicle, I don't know what else to say.
